Land surveying has existed for about as long as the idea of land ownership. However, over the years, the technology of measurement has improved drastically. The uses and specific needs for different types of surveys have also evolved.

Surveying is the measurement and mapping of land, sea and air space. Surveyors identify, document, and verify these maps and measurements. A survey map includes a very detailed depiction of boundaries, elevations, and existing features, whether natural or man-made.

Importance of Surveys During Each Stage of a Project

Surveys are a must for infrastructure and development projects, and it's important to have a surveyor on the team for all stages of a project. During planning, surveys are used to determine the feasibility of the project. Then, during the design phase, surveys provide the basis for an accurate design and identify any potential roadblocks, keeping the project on track; during the construction phase for accurately locating project features; and during the post-construction phase by documenting the finished project.

Civil vs. Structural Engineers: What's the Difference?

Published on Fri, 10/30/2020 - 11:35
civil engineers and structural engineers in a meeting

Civil engineering and structural engineering are two disciplines that are commonly confused. Say you're working on a commercial building project or are designing a bridge to be built in your city. Do you need a civil engineer or a structural engineer for these projects? Your first instinct may be to assume that the commercial building project requires a structural engineer because it is… well, a structure. Likewise, you may assume that the bridge requires a civil engineer, because it's "relating to ordinary citizens and their concerns" (as goes the definition of 'civil').

Snake River Bridge - A True Legacy

In 1920, a bridge was originally built over the Snake River in Marsing, Idaho to ship produce to and from Canyon and Ada counties to outside areas. The site was chosen due to the fact that the pylons for the bridge could be built on the relatively shallow river bottom at this location.

Environment and Engineering: Beyond Form and Survival

Published on Mon, 10/05/2020 - 13:44
Environmental and Engineering

A simple internet inquiry for the definition of ‘Environment’ can be summarized in one word: surroundings.  Dig a little deeper though, and the reality of the meaning behind the word ‘Environment’ means so much more. Merriam-Webster’s definition is quite a mouthful:  the complex of physical, chemical, and biotic factors (such as climate, soil, and living things) that act upon an organism or an ecological community and ultimately determine its form and survival.  This is where T-O
