With assistance from T-O Engineers, the Reid Canal Company received a Idaho Water Resource Board (IWRB) 2021 flood management grant. This $200,000 grant will allow the canal company to replace a failing headgate that is vital in maintaining the integrity of a levee operated by the Snake River Flood Control District. The Bannock Feeder Canal, which is located in Madison County, Idaho, runs alongside the South Fork of the Snake River within an active flood zone. Replacement of the headgate will make the levee more resistant to failure and overtopping during flood events.
In the grant proposal, hydraulics project engineer, Hattie Zobott, PE, assisted the company by illustrating the need for this funding. This included highlighting how the flood district’s levee system works in concert with the canal system to help prevent flooding. The canals, which function as a flood channel, are used to divert flood waters around the levee. However, the headgate, which was installed more than 100 years ago, is not likely to withstand the next flood event. If the structure were to fail, the flood waters would breach the levee and cause flooding in the area it currently protects.
“This project will provide important flood prevention protection for nearby residents," said T-O hydraulics project engineer, Hattie Zobott. “It’s gratifying to see T-O play such a key role in helping organizations obtain funding for essential infrastructure. Without the grant, this project would not be possible.”
